The story of this route

Known in antiquity as Mysian Olympus, the mountain rose as rocks formed deep underground were pushed up to the surface. We talk about marble and granite, and the valleys and lakes left by the ice ages, right where they are.

As we climb, the forest changes: from chestnut and oak to beech, then to the Uludağ fir that takes its name from this mountain, and finally to the meadows above the treeline. Often, the rock under our feet explains why a tree grows where it does.
